Henry Ford's wife, Clara, drove an electric car from 1908 to 1922.  Although electric cars were expensive, drivers did not have to crank the motor to start the engine or shift gears.  Pictured below is Clara's 1914 Detroit Electric Model 47 Brougham, which is on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.  Price was $3,730.  For comparison, a 1914 Model T cost $440.
